Scholars have divided Chinese traditional marriage culture into six phases.

The first is primeval group marriage phase.

At the primeval group living period, men and women infested. There was no rule for marriage. According to scholars’ guess, the marriage between brothers and sisters, parents and children was immoderately at the beginning of the primeval group living period.

The second is consanguinity marriage. 

It is also called ”brother-sister marriage”. At this time, only the same position in the family hierarchy were allowed to marry. This marriage phase was still located in tribe interior.

The third is looting marriage. 

At that time, there were lots of tribe wars. Women became part of the war captures. Then one war occurred, many women were looted to another tribe and then were married. This looting marriage also looted civilization of better bearing and rearing.

The forth is tribe-outside marriage. 

According to the scholars’ inference, tribe-outside marriage was the sign of matrilineal society. The scholars guess that at the matrilineal society, the tribe-inside was forbidden to marry. The men must seek women from tribe outside. Meantime, their women would marry other men from other tribes.

The fifty is couple marriage. 

At this period, each woman may have several husbands and one was the main husband, vice versa. It was a transition phase from group marriage to monogamy. This phase occurred from the golden ages of the matrilineal society and ended with the appearance of domestic economy.
The last is monogamy marriage. 

This marriage was developed from couple marriage and occurred in paternal line society at the end of primitive society. The productivity was developed a lot. Men played an important role at the production. Then the position of women and men changed a lot; men began to own the dominant position. At this time, marriage was also transited from couple marriage to monogamy.
